We spent 2016 meticulously examining feminine political figures’ wardrobes, each within the information and at the large display. On October 18, we misplaced our minds over Michelle Obama’s shocking Versace get dressed. On November nine, we dissected the that means in the back of Hillary Clinton’s red pantsuit. On December 2, when the buzzy, Pablo Larrain-directed biopic Jackie hit theaters, any other former First Lady commanded our consideration: Jackie Kennedy Onassis, by means of actress Natalie Portman.
Most of the film follows Jackie’s actions within the days following JFK’s premature dying, a time marked through grief and iconic taste moments. Jackie, who’d transform recognized for her veneer of grace and magnificence, expressed her inside turmoil via style. At Lyndon B. Johnson’s swearing-in, the previous FLOTUS’ red, navy-trimmed, bloodstained Chanel go well with was once a testomony to her grief (this was once hours after Kennedy’s capturing — she’d refused to modify). At the overdue President’s funeral, his widow’s waist-length mourning veil was once any other remark unto itself.
However, just like Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, Jackie can’t be fallacious for a way advert. (Although dress clothier Madeline Fontaine does nail it.) After Wednesday night time’s AARP Movies for Grownups Screening of the movie, Oscar frontrunners Natalie Portman and Pablo Larrain shared their perspectives on Jackie’s true identification, and what the movie’s in reality about.
For Larrain, Jackie and JFK’s mystery-shrouded tale is a reminder to appear past the headlines. (#Relevant.) “I think there is a very long distance in between what really happens and what we know,” the director affirmed. “Even though we did research and made a movie about it, we will never really know who Jackie was and what happened between Jackie and JFK. If you knew, you wouldn’t be making a movie about it. We are interested and made a movie because of this big mystery. I like and respect that we never know and have to imagine these things. The politics are always changing and reshaping. When we made this movie, this country was different than it is today. It’s happening and in a few weeks it will be very different. Things change so fast and this movie means something totally different than before.”
Portman, in the meantime, sees the movie as an ode to the complexity of human personality. “It’s the beauty of Pablo’s approach — he wasn’t trying to give an easy answer or definitive identity who this person was, nor a specific feeling or message. It’s like real life and how human beings can be a million different things at once — wise, strong, authoritative, manipulative and not completely straightforward. It’s many things at once and a complicated reality.”
In reality, Jackie’s multifaceted nature is what maximum fascinates Portman. “I think it’s amazing to see someone who’s been so socialized but also taught to be strong and have a survival instinct and tribal resilience,” the actress shared. “To see the mix of someone who can have cocktails at a function but survive in those difficult situations is a strange and beautiful contrast.”
Something to bite on while you’ve completed drooling over that implausible purple Dior go well with which, sadly, does no longer make an look within the sneak peek beneath…
